AI voice chat: talk to ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini by voice

Part of our guide: Best AI chatbots

AI voice chat lets you speak to an assistant and hear it answer out loud, in real time, with the option to interrupt it mid-sentence. ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok all have voice modes in their mobile apps, and all four offer some voice use for free. They differ in daily limits, whether the assistant can see through your camera, which languages work well and what happens to your recordings.

Below is how each one works, what it costs and which fits which use. Details were checked in the vendors’ help pages on 21 October 2026.

How AI voice chat works

Older voice assistants turned your speech into text, sent the text to a model and read the reply aloud with a synthetic voice. That still exists (ChatGPT calls it Standard mode). The newer real-time voice modes process audio directly. The practical differences: replies start faster, you can interrupt naturally, and the assistant picks up tone and pauses rather than only words.

Most voice modes keep a text transcript in the chat afterwards, so you can scroll back or copy what was said.

ChatGPT Voice

ChatGPT has three voice modes, chosen under Settings, Voice. Live runs on GPT-Live-1.1 and can listen and talk at the same time, which makes interruptions feel natural. Advanced is the earlier real-time mode and is the one that supports video and screen sharing on iOS and Android. Standard transcribes your speech first and then answers, which is slower but works on weaker connections.

Limits run over a rolling 24 hours: limited on Free, 3 hours on Go and Plus, 15 hours on Pro at $100 a month, and unlimited on Pro at $200. Voice also works in CarPlay on supported iPhones and in the desktop apps. ChatGPT keeps audio clips with the transcript for 30 days in Live and Advanced modes, while Standard deletes audio after transcription (OpenAI).

Best for: long conversations, language practice and hands-free use in the car.

Gemini Live

Gemini Live is Google’s voice mode in the Gemini mobile app. Tap Live at the bottom of the app or say “Hey Google, let’s talk Live.” You can point your camera at something (“What plant is this?”, “How do I fix this bike chain?”) or share your screen and ask about what’s on it. Live is not available in the Gemini web app (Google).

Best for: Android users, help with things in front of you, and questions about Gmail, Calendar or other Google apps.

Claude voice mode

Claude’s voice mode works in the iOS, Android, desktop and web apps, and Anthropic says it is designed to work best on phones. Since July 2026 it supports Opus and Sonnet as well as Haiku; voice starts on the model you last used in text chat. You can switch between voice and typing in the same chat without losing context, and Claude can check connected apps such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and Slack. Beyond English, it has beta support for French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish, which you select manually (MacRumors).

Voice uses your normal Claude usage limits rather than a separate allowance.

Best for: thinking a problem through out loud with a strong reasoning model, and moving between voice and text in the same work session.

Grok voice

xAI released Grok Voice 3.0 on 14 October 2026. Grok’s voice mode is in the Grok and X apps, and the higher Grok plans raise usage limits. If you already pay for X Premium or a Grok plan, it is worth trying; otherwise ChatGPT and Gemini have more documented features for voice.

Which voice assistant to choose

  • Practicing a language: ChatGPT Voice, for its long daily limits and natural interruptions. Claude is a good second choice for its supported languages.
  • Help with something you can see: Gemini Live or ChatGPT’s Advanced mode, which both take camera input on mobile.
  • Hands-free in the car: ChatGPT, which works in CarPlay.
  • Thinking through a hard problem: Claude with Opus, or ChatGPT.
  • Free use: Gemini Live on Android and ChatGPT’s free tier.

Tips for better voice conversations

  1. Use headphones. Background noise and echo cause the assistant to mishear or to interrupt itself.
  2. Set the language explicitly in settings if you speak anything other than English.
  3. Ask for short answers: “Keep replies under three sentences unless I ask for more.” Long spoken answers are tiring to follow.
  4. Give it a role for practice: “You’re a waiter in Madrid. Speak only Spanish and correct my mistakes after each reply.”
  5. Check the transcript for facts and numbers. Spoken answers are easier to accept without checking.

Privacy: what happens to your voice

Voice recordings are personal data. ChatGPT stores audio for 30 days alongside the transcript in its real-time modes. Gemini, Claude and Grok follow their own data settings, so check the privacy section of each app before discussing anything sensitive. If your employer restricts AI use, voice chats are covered by the same rules as text.

FAQ

Is AI voice chat free?

Yes, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude all include voice on their free plans, with limits. ChatGPT’s paid plans raise the limit to 3 hours a day on Go and Plus.

Can I talk to ChatGPT like a phone call?

Yes. In Live mode ChatGPT listens and speaks at the same time, and you can interrupt it, much like a call. It works in the mobile and desktop apps and in CarPlay.

Which AI voice sounds the most natural?

This is subjective and changes with each model update. ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok all released new voice models in 2026. Try the free voice mode in each and see which you prefer for your language.

Can AI voice chat see what I’m looking at?

Gemini Live and ChatGPT’s Advanced voice mode can use your phone’s camera and screen sharing. ChatGPT’s newer Live mode does not support video yet.

Conclusion

For most people, ChatGPT Voice and Gemini Live are the most complete voice assistants in late 2026, with Claude the best choice when you want deeper reasoning in a spoken conversation. All three are free to try, so test them with the same five-minute conversation. For a broader look at assistants for conversation, see most realistic AI chatbots.
