The five AI model families most people choose between in late 2026 are OpenAI’s GPT, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, DeepSeek and xAI’s Grok. On paper they are close: each has a flagship model, a cheap fast model, a context window of half a million tokens or more, and a consumer app at about $20 a month. The real differences are in price per token, what the consumer app can do, whether the weights are open, and where your data is stored.
This AI models comparison is the overview. Each pair has its own detailed comparison, linked in the sections below. All facts were checked on 21 October 2026 on the vendors’ own pages.

Two things in this table move fast. Gemini 4 Argon’s API price doubles on 1 December 2026 when its launch pricing ends. And every vendor shipped at least one new model between August and October 2026, so expect at least one row to be out of date within a couple of months.
What each model family is known for
The descriptions below rest on what each vendor documents and on features you can check in the apps. We do not repeat benchmark scores: every vendor reports its own, and independent leaderboards reorder every few weeks.
OpenAI GPT and ChatGPT
GPT’s advantage is the product around it. ChatGPT has web search, file analysis, image generation (ChatGPT Images 2.5 since September 2026), voice built on GPT-Live, memory, scheduled tasks, plugins for Gmail, Google Drive and Microsoft Office, and Work mode for longer tasks on your desktop. If you want one app that does a bit of everything, it is still the default. The downside is a crowded plan lineup: Free, Go, Plus, three Pro tiers, Business and Enterprise, with different model access in each.
Anthropic Claude
Claude is the family most often chosen for long documents, writing and coding. Every current Claude model has a 1 million token context window and accepts PDFs of up to 1,000 pages (Anthropic). Anthropic describes Opus 5.5 as its recommended model for most work and Fable 5.1 as the model for the hardest reasoning and long agent tasks. Claude does not generate images. Our Claude vs ChatGPT comparison goes into the differences in daily use, and how to use Claude covers setup.
Google Gemini
Gemini’s strengths are input types and Google integration. Gemini 4 Argon accepts text, images, video, audio and PDF in one request, with a context window of about 1 million tokens (Google). In the consumer app it connects to Gmail, Docs, Drive and over 40 other apps, and the Google AI Pro plan bundles 5 TB of storage. For many people already paying for Google storage, that bundle is the deciding factor. See Gemini vs ChatGPT.
DeepSeek
DeepSeek is the price and openness option. Its app is free, its API is the cheapest of the five at the flagship tier, and its weights are published under the MIT license, so other providers can host the same model. The trade-off is privacy: DeepSeek’s own service stores data on servers in China. Details in DeepSeek vs ChatGPT.
xAI Grok
Grok is tied to X (formerly Twitter). It can draw on real-time posts from X, and the higher Grok plans include image and video generation through Grok Imagine. On the API, Grok 4.7 has the lowest output price of the US flagships at $6 per million tokens. Its consumer plans start at $8 and go up to $200 a month. See Grok vs ChatGPT.
Where Perplexity fits
Perplexity is not a model family. It is an answer engine that runs models from several labs, including OpenAI and Anthropic, on top of its own web search. If your main use is research with sources, read Perplexity vs ChatGPT.
Which model for which task
This is a starting point based on documented features, not a ranking.
| Task | Good first choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Long documents and PDFs | Claude or Gemini | 1M-token context; Claude reads charts in PDFs up to 100 pages, Gemini reads PDF, audio and video |
| Coding | Claude, GPT, DeepSeek | All three vendors focus their latest releases on coding and agents; DeepSeek is cheapest |
| Image generation | ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok | Claude and DeepSeek do not generate images |
| Research with sources | Perplexity, ChatGPT search, Gemini | Built-in web search with citations |
| Voice conversation | ChatGPT, Gemini Live, Claude, Grok | Real-time voice in the official apps |
| Lowest cost on the API | DeepSeek, GPT-6 Luna, Haiku 5.5 | Small models from $0.10 per 1M input tokens |
| Self-hosting | DeepSeek, Qwen, Mistral | Open weights; see open-source ChatGPT alternatives |

How to compare models on your own work
Vendor benchmarks measure vendor-chosen tasks. A ten-minute test on your own prompts tells you more. Here is the method we use:
- Pick five prompts from real work: one writing task, one summary of a document you know well, one reasoning or math problem, one coding or spreadsheet task, and one question where you know the correct answer.
- Send each prompt, word for word, to each model in a fresh chat with no custom instructions.
- For the summary and the known-answer question, check accuracy first. A fluent answer with one invented fact is worse than a plain correct one.
- Note length and formatting. Some models default to long bulleted answers; others write prose.
- Repeat the one task that matters most a second time. Answers vary between runs, and one sample can mislead.
If you do this often, an all-in-one AI app saves switching between five apps.
Practical takeaways
- For one general-purpose app, ChatGPT has the widest feature set; Claude and Gemini are the main alternatives at the same $20 price.
- On the API, flagship output prices range from about $4 to $50 per million tokens, so price-check before you commit.
- If data location matters, avoid sending sensitive data to DeepSeek’s own service; host the open weights elsewhere instead.
- Check model names before you buy any third-party tool. Lineups changed every month in 2026.
FAQ
Which AI model is the best in 2026?
None leads on every task. In October 2026 GPT-6, Claude Opus 5.5 and Fable 5.1, Gemini 4 Argon, Grok 4.7 and DeepSeek V4 are close enough that price, features and your own test results matter more than the vendor’s leaderboard claims.
What is the difference between an LLM and a chatbot?
An LLM (large language model) is the model itself, such as Claude Opus 5.5. A chatbot is the app around it, such as Claude.ai or ChatGPT, which adds memory, file handling, search and other tools. Two apps using the same LLM can behave differently.
Which LLM has the largest context window?
Claude’s current models and DeepSeek V4 list 1 million tokens, and Gemini 4 Argon lists 1,048,576 tokens for input and output combined. Grok 4.7 lists 500,000. A larger window lets you paste longer documents, but answers can still miss details buried in the middle.
Are open-source AI models as good as GPT or Claude?
The largest open-weight models, such as DeepSeek V4-Pro, are competitive with closed flagships on many tasks, but they need data-center hardware. Models small enough for one computer are noticeably weaker.
Conclusion
The gap between the top model families is small in late 2026, and it changes with each release. Choose by price, by the app features you need and by where your data goes, then confirm with five of your own prompts. For pair-by-pair detail, start with Claude vs ChatGPT or Gemini vs ChatGPT.
